Definition Of Preposition : Word or group of words used especially before a noun or pronoun to show place, position, time, method etc, is called a Preposition.

A Preposition is a word placed before a noun or noun equivalent to show in what relation the person or thing denotes thereby stands to something else.

Definition Of Preposition in Hindi : Preposition वह शब्द है जो किसी Noun/Pronoun रूपी Object के पूर्व प्रयुक्त होकर वाक्य के अन्य शब्दों के साथ अपना संबंध बताता है।

Types Of Prepositions | Kinds Of Preposition
According to construction there are six types of preposition (बनावट के अनुसार Preposition के छः भेद हैं।)
- Simple Preposition : At, by, for, from, in, of, off, on, out, through, till, to, up, with, after, under, over, since इत्यादि Simple Preposition के उदाहरण हैं।

- Double Preposition : जब दो Simple Preposition को मिलाकर कोई नया Preposition बनाया जाता है, तो उसे Double Preposition कहते हैं; जैसे – in + to = into, up + to = upto, un + to = unto, up + on = upon, with + in= within, with + out = without etc.

Double preposition are two simple preposition used together.
Example – Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess.
The baby climbed onto the table.
- Compound Preposition : किसी Noun, Adjective या Adverb के पूर्व कोई Preposition (प्रायः a = on, be = by) लगाने से बने Preposition को Compound Preposition कहते हैं ; जैसे – Across = on + cross (Noun), Around = on + round (Adjective), Beside = by + side (Noun), Before = by + fore (Adjective), Along = on + long (Adjective), Behind = by + hind (Adjective), Amidst = on + middle (Adjective) Beyond = by + yond (Adverb)

Compound preposition are similar to double preposition but are generally created by prefixing a preposition to a noun, adjective or adverb.
Example – Rahul sat beside Ruby.
He found a coin beneath the cot.
- Participle Preposition : कुछ Present Participles जो किसी Noun Pronoun को qualify नहीं करते और स्वतंत्र रूप से प्रयुक्त होते हैं, Participle Prepositions कहलाते हैं; जैसे – barring (छोड़कर), concerning (सम्बन्धित), considering (विचार करते हुए), not withstanding (बावजूद), parding (तक), regarding (सम्बन्ध में), respecting (विषय में), touching (सम्बन्ध), during (दौरान), owing (कारण से), excepting (छोड़कर, सिवाय), including (शामिल करते हुए) etc.

Participle preposition have ending such as -ed and -ing.
Example – She is interested in anything concerning dogs.

Phrasal Preposition : जो Prepositions Phrases लेकर बनते हैं, उन्हें Phrasal Prepositions कहा जाता है; जैसे – in accordance with, because of, by dint of, by virtue of, for the sake of, in place of, in event of etc.

Phrasal preposition include a preposition, an object and the object’s modifier.
Example – The cricket match was cancelled because of the rain.
He succeeded by means of determination.
Disguised Preposition : कुछ Prepositions ऐसे होते हैं जो छिपे रहते हैं। ऐसे Prepositions Disguised Prepositions कहलाते हैं; जैसे – You got to see him once a week. (a = in), It is five o’clock. (five of clock)
According to function there are three types of preposition (कार्य के अनुसार Preposition के तीन भेद होते हैं।)
- Prepositions Of Direction : वैसे Preposition जिनसे दिशा का बोध हो, Prepositions Of Direction कहलाता है।
Example – across, against, along, at, down, for, from, into, on, to, towards, up. - Prepositions Of Place Or Position : वैसे Prepositions जिनसे स्थान/स्थिति का बोध हो, Prepositions of Place or Position कहलता है। Example – above, amid, amidst, among, amongst, at, before, below, beside, between, by, in, in front of, on, over to, under.
- Prepositions Of Time : वैसे Prepositions जिनसे समय का बोध हो, Prepositions of Time कहलाता है। Example – after, at, before, between, by, during, for, from, in, on, since, till, to, until, within.
Uses Of Prepositions | Prepositions के प्रयोग
Here we will see the use of some such prepositions which are used the most in our daily life :
- Across : इसका प्रयोग दिशा (Direction) बताने हेतु निम्नलिखित अर्थों में होता है-
- ‘के पार’ या ‘के उस पार’ (on the opposite side of)
जैसे – She lives across the park. - ‘एक ओर से दूसरी ओर तक’/ ‘इस पार से उस पार तक’ (from one side to an other)
जैसे – There is a big bridge across the Ganga at Patna.
I easily swim across the river. - ‘दोनों ओर’ (both sides)
जैसे – He threw the shawl across his shoulders.
- Against : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग दिशा बताने हेतु निम्नलिखित अर्थों में होता है-
- ‘के विरुद्ध’ (in contravention of)
जैसे – This boy has acted against the orders of the Principal. - ‘प्रतिकूल’/’ के विपरीत’ (opposite)
जैसे – Running against the wind is difficult. - ‘से सटकर/ से लगा’/’से लगी’ (pressing on)
जैसे – There is a ladder against the wall. - ‘से’ (with); जैसे – The waves beat against the shore.
- Along : इसका प्रयोग Direction बताने हेतु ‘सटे-सटे’ / ‘किनारे-किनारे’ (in the same line of) के अर्थ में Corridor, line, river, road इत्यादि के साथ होता है। जैसे – He walks along the river bank.
- At : ‘At’ का प्रयोग ‘लक्ष्य’ (target) बताने के लिए होता है; जैसे – The tiger is enraged at its master.
- Down : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग Direction बताने हेतु ‘नीचे’/’नीचे की ओर’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – He ran down the hill.
- For : ‘For’ का प्रयोग ‘मंजिल’ (destination) बताने के लिए होता हैं। जैसे – This is the train for Patna.
- From : इसका प्रयोग ‘की दिशा से’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – The wind is blowing from the west to the east.
- Into : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग ‘में’ के अर्थ में अंदर की ओर गति बताने हेतु होता है। जैसे – The child fell into the well.
- On : ‘on’ का प्रयोग ‘पर’ के अर्थ में लक्ष्य (goal / target) बताने हेतु होता है। जैसे – He opened fire on his enemies.
Note : Direction बताने में At तथा On के प्रयोग में अंतर नहीं होता है।
- To : इसका प्रयोग Direction बताने हेतु निम्नलिखित अर्थों में होता है।
- ‘को ओर’ (towards); जैसे – This road leads to Patna.
- ‘पास’ (near); जैसे – Come to me.
- ‘यहाँ से वहाँ तक’ (from here to there); जैसे – From Patna to Gaya.
Note : Home तथा abroad के पहले ‘to’ का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे – He is going home / abroad next week.
- Towards : ‘Towards’ का प्रयोग ‘की ओर’/ की दिशा में’ (in the direction of) के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – He is going towards the school.
- Up : ‘Up’ नामक इस Prepositions का प्रयोग ‘ऊपर’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – Seeing the police the thief climbed up a tree.
- Above’ / ‘Below’: ‘Over’ / ‘Under’ : इन चारों प्रीपोजिशंस के प्रयोग अलग-अलग स्थिति में अलग अलग तरीके से होता है, जो निम्नांकित हैं –
- जब ‘Above’/ ‘Over’ का प्रयोग किसी चीज से ऊपर’ (higher than something) के अर्थ में तथा ‘Below’/ ‘Under’ का प्रयोग किसी चीज से नीचे’ (lower than something) के अर्थ में होता है, तब ‘Above’/ ‘over’ में कोई अंतर नहीं होता है। साथ ही साथ, ‘Below’/’Under’ में भी कोई अंतर नहीं होता है। जैसे – The birds are flying above / over the roof. Look in the cupboard below / under the sink.
- जब Level बताना हो तो ‘ऊपर’ के अर्थ में ‘Above’ तथा ‘नीचे’ के अर्थ में ‘Below’ का प्रयोग होता है । पर, जब ‘लम्बवत् सम्बंध’ । ‘सामीप्य’ बताना हो तो ‘ऊपर’ के अर्थ में ‘over’ तथा ‘नीचे’ के अर्थ में ‘Under’ का प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे – His income is above / below ten thousand a month. My son has a cut mark over his left eye. The cat is sitting under the table.
- Amid’ / ‘Amidst’ : ‘Among’ / ‘Amongst’ : इन सभी प्रीपोजिशंस के प्रयोग भिन्न-भिन्न स्थितियों में भिन्न-भिन्न तरीके से होता है, जो इस प्रकार है –
- ‘के बीच में’ (in the middle) के अर्थ में ‘Amid’ / ‘Amidst’ / ‘Among’ / ‘Amongst’ के प्रयोग में कोई अंतर नहीं है, बशर्ते जब इनके बाद Countable Noun का प्रयोग हो। जैसे – The school stands amid / amidst the garden, The school stands among / amongst the garden.
- के बीच में’ के अर्थ में ‘Amid’ /’ Amidst’ : ‘Among’/ ‘Amongst’ के प्रयोग में यही अंतर है कि इस अर्थ में ‘Amid’ / ‘Amidst’ के साथ Uncountable Noun का भी प्रयोग हो सकता है, लेकिन ‘Among’ / ‘Amongst’ के साथ नहीं। जैसे – A child’s doll was found amid / amidst the wastage of the factory.
Note : ‘Among’ / ‘Amongst’ का प्रयोग जब ‘दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों के बीच में’ के अर्थ में होता है, तब Among Consonant तथा Vowel दोनों से प्रारंभ होने वाले शब्दों के पहले आता है, जबकि ‘Amongst’ केवल Vowel से प्रारंभ होनेवाले शब्दों के साथ ही प्रयुक्त होता है।
जैसे – Divide these mangoes among the three boys.
Divide these mangoes among / amongst us.
- Among’ / ‘Amongst’ : ‘Between’ : इन Prepositions के प्रयोग निम्नांकित स्थितियो में अलग-अलग तरीके से होती है।
- ‘Between’ का प्रयोग के बीच में’ के अर्थ में दो व्यक्तियों/वस्तुओं के साथ होता है।
जैसे – Divide this money between Hari and Mohan.
You have to choose one thing between pen and pencil.
There is no friendship between him and her.
उपर्युक्त उदाहरणों से स्पष्ट होता है कि ‘between’ के बाद प्रयुक्त Noun / Pronoun के बाद हमेशा “and’ का प्रयोग होता है एवं इसके बाद प्रयुक्त हुए Personal Pronouns हमेशा Objective Case form में होते हैं ।
2. Among’ तथा ‘Amongst’ का प्रयोग ‘के बीच में’ के अर्थ में दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों/वस्तुओं के साथ क्रमशः Vowel + Consonant तथा Vowel से प्रारंभ होनेवाले शब्दों के पहले होता है।
जैसे – Distribute this amount of money among these five boys.
Distribute this amount of money among / amongst us.
Note : आजकल ‘amongst’ का प्रयोग लगभग समाप्त हो गया है और इसकी जगह ‘among’ का ही प्रयोग होने लगा है।
Note : पारस्परिक सम्बंध बताने हेतु ‘between’ का प्रयोग दो से अधिक व्यक्तियों/ वस्तुओं के साथ भी होता है।
जैसे – The three children saved over a hundred pounds between them.
Between them the passengers managed to push the bus to the side of the road.
- At’ / ‘In’ : इन दोनों Prepositions का प्रयोग इस प्रकार होता है।
- ‘में’ के अर्थ में छोटे स्थानों (जैसे-गाँव, कस्वा, मुहल्ला, शहर इत्यादि) के लिए ‘at’ तथा बड़े स्थानों (जैसे—महानगर, राज्य, देश, महादेश) के लिए ‘in’ का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे – I live at Biharsharif. Mohan has settled himself in Delhi / Bihar / the U.S.A.
- ‘में’ के ही अर्थ में किसी खास बिन्दु पर स्थिति बताने हेतु ‘at’ का तथा ‘ के अन्दर’ के अर्थ में ‘in’ का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे – It is very hot at the centre of the earth. I live in this room.
- निम्नलिखित शब्दों से पहले at का ही प्रयोग होता है- at the theatre, at home, at temple, at school, at college, at university, at an address, at reception, at a certain point, at the bridge, at the crossroads, at the station, at the airport, at the bus stop, at the platform, at the traffic lights, at a party, at a match, at a lecture, at a concert, at a conference, at theround aboul, at the top / bottom……., at page……….etc.
- निम्नलिखित शब्दों से पहले in का ही प्रयोग होता है – in a picture, in jail, in prison, in hospital, in a village, in a town, in a city, in a streel, in a forest, in woods, in a field, in a desert, in the sky, in the world, in the universe, in the rain, in a tent, in a line, in a row, in a queue, in a book, in a newspaper, in a letter etc.
Note : Church के पहले ‘in’/’at’ दोनों का प्रयोग होता है।
- Before’ / ‘In front of’ : इन दोनो Prepositions के प्रयोग निम्न स्थितियों में होता है।
- यदि ‘कतार’ (queue) की चर्चा हो, तो ‘Before’ / ‘In front of’ दोनों का ‘के सामने’ के अर्थ में समान रूप से प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे – She was standing in front of (or before) me in the queue. - ‘के सामने’ के ही अर्थ में ‘Before’ तथा ‘In front of के प्रयोग में यह अंतर है कि ‘Before’ का प्रयोग ‘व्यक्ति के सामने में’ के अर्थ में होता है, जबकि ‘In front of का प्रयोग ‘वस्तु के सामने में’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – The accused appeared before the judge. There is a garden in front of my house.
- ‘के सामने’ के ही अर्थ में one’s eyes, one’s very eyes के पहले ‘before’ का प्रयोग तो होता है, लेकिन in front of का नहीं। जैसे – He was killed by the tiger before my eyes /my very eyes.
- Behind : Behind का प्रयोग ‘पीछे’ (at the back of) के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – The thief hid behind the door.
He has left nothing behind him. - ‘Beside’ / ‘By’ : Beside’ तथा ‘By’ का प्रयोग समान रूप से ‘के बगल में’ (at the side of) / ‘के बाद’ (next to) / ‘नजदीक’ (near) के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – Come and sit beside / by me. Who is sitting beside / by you? There is a garden beside / by the river.
- On : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग निम्नांकित स्थितियों में होता है।
- ‘पर’ के अर्थ में ‘on’ का प्रयोग स्थिर अवस्था (static position) तथा सतह स्पर्श (surface contact) बताने के लिए होता है। जैसे – Put the books on the table. He is carrying mangoes on his head.
- “किसी रेखा पर’ / ‘किसी स्थान पर’ का बोध कराने के लिए भी ‘on’ का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे – She met me on the way to college. Standing on the first floor he is calling me.
- निम्नलिखित शब्दों के साथ भी हमेशा On का ही प्रयोग होता है – on the left I right, on the first / second / ground floor, on a list / farm, on the menu, on the front / back of a letter / piece of paper etc.
- To : इसका प्रयोग Preposition of Time के रूप में Verb of movement के साथ ‘व्यक्ति / स्थान की दिशा में’ का बोध कराने के लिए होता है। जैसे – He threw the ball to me but it was too high for me to catch.
- ‘After’: ‘In’ : निम्नांकित स्थितियों में इन दोनो Prepositions का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
- Past Tense में ‘In’ का प्रयोग ‘in the end of the period’ तथा ‘After’ का प्रयोग later than the period’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – Shereturned in a month. (महीना खत्म होने के पहले/महीना खत्म होने के समय ही), She returned after a month. (महीना खत्म होने के बाद)
- Future Tense में ‘After’ का प्रयोग Point of time के पहले होता है, जबकि ‘In’ का प्रयोग Period of time के पहले होता है।जैसे – They will return after sunset. (Point of time), They will return in a week. (Period of time)
- At : निम्नांकित स्थितियों में at का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
- ‘At’ का प्रयोग निश्चित समय बिन्दु बताने वाले शब्दों के पहले होता है। जैसे – get up at 5 o’clock in the morning. The train will start at 11:10 a.m.
- ‘At’ का प्रयोग दिन/समय की सबसे छोटी अवधि बताने वाले शब्दों के पहले भी होता है। जैसे – at dawn, at day break, at sunrise, at nvilight, at midnight etc. जैसे – I like to eat bread at night.
- ‘Age’ तथा Stage of development बताने हेतु भी ‘At’ का ही प्रयोग होता है। जैसे – My father died at the age of forty.
At the last stage of war, very few people could save their lives. - वर्ष की अवधि विशेष के नामों के पहले भी ‘At’ का ही प्रयोग होता है। जैसे – Hindus go to temple at Deepawali.
Children ate a lot of sweets at Eid-ul-fiter. - Bed time, some appointed time,amoment, minute, hour इत्यादि शब्दों के पहले भी ‘At’ का ही प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे – I don’t like any disturbance at bed time. You shouldn’t forget to meet him at the appointed time.
Note : Night के पहले भी article रहित ‘At’ का ‘during any night’ के अर्थ में प्रयोग होता है।
- Before’ / ‘Within’ : ‘के पहले के अर्थ में Point of time के साथ ‘Before’ का तथा Period of time के साथ ‘within’ का प्रयोग सभी Tense में होता है। जैसे – He returns / returned / will return before 9 p.m. He returned within a week.
Note : उपर्युक्त वाक्य में ‘between’ की जगह ‘from………to’ का भी प्रयोग हो सकता है। जैसे – The school remains opened from 10 am to 4p.m.
By : इस प्रीपोजिशंस का प्रयोग निम्न स्थितियों में होता है।
- ‘By’ का प्रयोग Point of time के पहले ‘प्रदत्त समय से पहले’ । ‘प्रदत्त समय पर’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – Please make all arrangements by next Sunday. (दूसरे रविवार से पहले), Please meet me / inform me by tomorrow moming. (कल सुबह तक)
- ‘By’ का प्रयोग ‘during’ के अर्थ में day और might के पहले भी होता है। जैसे – The sun shines by day and the moon by night.
- ‘During’ / ‘In’ : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित स्थितियो में होता है।
- During’ तथा ‘In’ का प्रयोग एक-दूसरे के बदले हो सकता है। जैसे – in the evening during evening, in the Ancient Ages / during the Ancient Ages, in January / during January, in 2000 / during 2000, in the 21st century / during 21st century, in the night / during the night, in the day / during the day etc.
- एक खास स्थिति या आदत बताने हेतु केवल ‘During’ का प्रयोग होता है, ‘In’ का नहीं। जैसे – Many farmers suffer hardship during femine.
- किसी घटना के विवरण हेतु जो कुछ समय तक चलता है, को बताने हेतु ‘के दरम्यान’ के अर्थ में stay, meal, visit इत्यादि Nouns के पहले सदा ‘During’ का ही प्रयोग होता है, न कि ‘In’ का। जैसे – During the meal they talked about their plans.
- During’ / ‘For’ : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित स्थितियो में होता है।
- During’ का प्रयोग Definite Period of Time या वह समय जिसकी जानकारी पहले से होती है, के पहले होता है जबकि ‘For’ का प्रयोग Indefinite Period of Time के पहले होता है। जैसे – for a long time / while / moment, for two months etc. during summer / Holi/Medieval Ages / one’s childhood / war / meeting/ function etc.
- ‘For’ का प्रयोग Definite Period of Time के पहले भी होता है, पर पूरी अवधि का बोध कराने के लिए खासकर जब उद्देश्य बताना हो। जैसे – She has done all the preparations for Holi.
- परन्तु, ‘During’ का प्रयोग ‘पूरी अवधि’ या उस अवधि में ‘किसी समय बिन्दु’ को बताने हेतु होता। जैसे – He was busy last week and during that period he did not visit anywhere.
- ‘For: ‘Since’ : For’ (से) तथा ‘Since’ (से) का प्रयोग क्रमश: Period of Time एवं Point of Time and Present Perfect, Present Perfect Continuous, Past Perfect qe Past Perfect Continuous Tense के वाक्यों के लिए होता है। जैसे – I have been / had been reading in this school for three years. Mr. Sharma has / had been teaching in this school since 2000.
- ‘From’: ‘Since : Point of Time का बोध कराने हेतु ‘From’ का प्रयोग किसी भो Tense में किया जा सकता है, परन्तु ‘Since’ का प्रयोग Point of Time बताने हेतु Present और Past Tense में ही होता है। जैसे – He has / had been ill since Monday. He will not come from Sunday. He was absent from Monday to Friday.
- In : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित स्थितियों में होता है।
- “In’ का प्रयोग दिन के भागों के नामों के पहले होता है। जैसे – in the day time / morning / afternoon / evening / night.
- In’ का प्रयोग ‘week’, ‘month’, ‘season’, ‘year’, ‘decade’, ‘century’, ‘age’ जैसी लम्बी अवधि बताने वाले शब्दों के पहले या इनके नामों के पहले भी होता है। जैसे- They will return here in a week. These poems were composed in the 18th century.
Note : यदि ‘morning’, ‘aftermoon’, ‘evening’ तथा ‘night’ का विशेष प्रयोग हो या किसी ‘day’, ‘date’, ‘event’ आदि के साथ निश्चित हो, तो इनके पहले ‘on’ का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे – On Sunday evening he visited me. There was another important meeting on that evening.
- In’/’Within’ : Future Tense में ‘In’ का प्रयोग ‘में’ / ‘बाद’ के अर्थ में तथा ‘Within’ का प्रयोग ‘के अंदर/पहले’ के अर्थ में Period of Time के पहले होता है। जैसे – Rekha will come in a week. (रेखा एक सप्ताह की अवधि समाप्त करने के बाद आएगी।), Rekha will come within a week. (रेखा एक सप्ताह के अंदर/पहले आ जाएगी।)
- On : इस Prepositions का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित स्थितियो में होता है।
- ‘on’ का प्रयोग खास दिन तथा तिथि के नामों के पहले होता है। जैसे – I shall see you on Sunday.
India became independent on 15th August, 1947. - ‘On’ का प्रयोग “journey’, ‘rip’, ‘voyage’ तथा ‘flight’ के पहले खासकर यह बताने के लिए होता है कि उस दरम्यान कोई कार्य हुआ या कोई घटना घटी। जैसे – She is on a journey to the U.S.A. They met us while we were on a trip to Italy.
- Till / Until : ‘Till / Until’ का Informal version है।
- इनका प्रयोग एक निश्चित समय तक’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – Wait until tomorrow. It may last till tomorrow.
- इनका प्रयोग किसी घटना विशेष के घटने के समय तक’ के अर्थ में भी होता है। जैसे – The secret was never told until after the old man’s death Don’t open it till your birthday.
- To : ‘To’ का प्रयोग Preposition of Time के रूप में -बजने में देर है’ के अर्थ में होता है। जैसे – lt is ten to five (5 बजने में 10 मिनट देर है।), It is eight minutes to five (5 बजने में 8 मिनट देर है।), It is quarter to five (5 बजने में 15 मिनट देर है।)

- Round’ : ‘Around’, ‘About’ : निम्नांकित स्थितियों में इसका प्रयोग किया जाता है :
(a) ‘Around’, ‘About’ ‘Round’ का प्रयोग ‘चारों ओर’ के अर्थ में किसी वृत्त या वक्र में गति स्थान बनाने हेतु होता है, जबकि ‘Around’ /’About’ का प्रयोग ‘यहाँ-वहाँ। ‘बहुत स्थानों में। ‘के विभिन्न भागों में के अर्थ में अनिश्चित गति स्थान बताने हेतु होता है।
जैसे – She walked round the car and looked a the wheels.
The earth moves round the sun.
The children were running around / about everywhere.
I like doing odd jobs around / about the house.
(b) Round’ का प्रयोग ‘समय नष्ट करने’ / ‘फालतू काम करने के’ बारे में बात करने के लिए नहीं होता है, जबकि ‘Around’ / ‘About’ का होता है।
जैसे – Stop roaming around / about.
(c) ‘Round’ का प्रयोग ‘लगभग’ (approximately) के अर्थ में नहीं होता है, जबकि ‘Around / About’ का होता है।
जैसे – There were around I about fifty people there.
- ‘Besides’ : ‘Except’ : ‘Apart from’ : निम्नांकित स्थितियों में इस Prepositions का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
(a) ‘के अतिरिक्त’ / ‘के अलावे’ / ‘के सिवा’ के अर्थ में ‘Besides’ जोड़ {addition) का ‘Except’ घटाव (subtraction) का तथा ‘Aparn from जोड़ तथा घटाव दोनों का बोधक होता है।
जैसे – Basides the violin, he play: the piano and the flute. (वायलिन के अलावे वह पियानो और बाँसुरी भी बजाता है)
I like all musical instruments except the violin. (मैं वायलिन छोड़कर अन्य सभी वाद्य यंत्र पसंद करता हूँ।)
Apart from the violin, he plays the piano and the flute. (वॉयलिन के अलावे वह पियानो और बाँसुरी भी बजाता है।)
I like all the musical instruments apart from the violin. (मैं वॉयलिन छोड़कर अन्य सभी वाद्य यंत्र पसंद करता हूँ ।)
(b) Nobody, No one, Nothing के बाद ‘besides’, ‘except’, ‘apart from’ का प्रयोग समान रूप से होता है।
जैसे – He has nothing besides / except / apart from his salary.
- ‘By’ : ‘Near’ : Near ‘निकट’ के अर्थ में ‘Near’ से अधिक निकटता का बोध कराने हेतु ‘By’ का प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे – We live near the sea. (समुद्र के आस-पास)
We live by the sea. (समुद्र के एकदम बगल में जहाँ से यह दिखता हो)
- Of / For : निम्नांकित स्थितियों में इन दोनों प्रीपोजिशंस का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
(a) ‘of’ तथा ‘For’ दोनों कारणबोधक अव्यय हैं।
जैसे- He died of cancer.
They were punished for committing a theft.
(b) ‘of’ तथा ‘For’ के प्रयोग में अंतर यह है कि Cause के बाद ‘of का प्रयोग होता है जबकि Reason के बाद ‘for’ का।
जैसे – What is the cause of this murder?
What is the reason for his absence?
(c) For’ का प्रयोग Preposition of Purpose के तौर पर भी होता है, पर ‘of का नहीं।
जैसे- I went to college for an interview with Prof. Sharma.
- ‘on’ / ‘Upon’ : ‘on’ का प्रयोग सामान्यतः विरामावस्था में रहनेवाले वस्तु के साथ होता है, जबकि ‘Upon’ का गत्यावस्था में रहनेवाले वस्तु के साथ। जैसे – He sat on a chair. He jumped upon his horse.
Note : आधुनिक प्रचलन में गत्यावस्था में रहनेवाले वस्तु के साथ भी ‘on’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

- Alms were distributed among five beggars. पाँच भिखारियों के बीच भीख बाँटे गए।
- The principal will return in a month. प्रधानाचार्य एक महीने में लौटेंगे।
- The principal will return within a month. प्रधानाचार्य एक महीने में (के अंदर) लौटेंगे।
- I return before 5 P.M. मैं शाम पाँच बजे के पहले लौट आऊंगा।
- Will you do it within two hours. क्या आप इसे दो घंटे में कर लेंगे।
- He is a member of my family. वह मेरे परिवार का सदस्य है।
- He took off his hat. उसने अपना टोप उतारा।
- He came and sat beside me. वह आया और मेरी बगल में बैठ गया।
- Eyebrow at the Bible besides the Ramayan. रामायण के अलावा मैंने बाइबल खरीदा।
- I can’t say anything before him. उनके सामने मैं कुछ नहीं कह सकता।
- There is a lack in front of my house. मेरे घर के सामने एक झील है।
- He is compared with his brother. उसकी तुलना उसके भाई से की जाती है।
- He competed with me. उसने मेरे साथ प्रतियोगिता की।
Omission Of Preposition
- Approach, assist, attack, benefit, combat, discuss, enter, inform, investigate, lack, marry, obey, resemble, sign, violate, recommend, resign, criticise, describe, reach climb, mount, board, fear, wed इत्यादि कुछ ऐसे Verbs है, जिनक बाद सामान्यत: अव्ययरहित Direct Objects का प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे –
- The train is now approaching Patna Junction.
- I hope you will assist me in this matter.
- I shall tombat your views at the meeting.
- We must discuss your plans.
- Conversation stopped as we entered the church.
- The police investigated the case.
- He is clever, but he lacks experience.
- He does not obey my words.
- Have you signed that contract?
- You should not have violated the rules.
Day, moming, noon, afternoon, evening, night, today, tomorrow, yesterday, Sunday, Monday, January, March इत्यादि समयसूचक शब्दों के पूर्व प्रयुक्त next, last, this, that, one, every, each, some, any, all de Prepositions at,on, in का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।
जैसे –
- See you next Monday.
- The meeting is this Thursday.
- I shall never forget meeting you that afternoon. Come any day you like.
- The party lasted all night.
- Three times a day, hundred rupees, an hour, eighty pence a kilo इत्यादि जैसे expressions में Preposition का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।
जैसे – Private tuitions cost 100 rupees an hour.
- What time के पहले ‘at’ तथा ‘What’/ Which day(s) के पहले ‘on’ का प्रयोग आजकल समाप्त होता जा रहा है।
जैसे –
- What time does his train arrive?
- What day is your appointment here?
- Which day do you have your music lesson?
- About+time expression के पूर्व प्रयुक्त ‘at’ को अक्सर drop कर दिया जाता है।
जैसे – I shall see you (at) about 3 o’clock.
- जब वाक्य से ‘कोई भी चीज कब तक चलती है’ का भाव निकले तो वैसे expres sions में ‘for’ को अक्सर drop कर दिया जाता है।
जैसे – I have been here (for) three weeks now. How long are you staying (for)?
- Height’, ‘weight’, ‘length’, ‘size’, ‘shape’, ‘age’, ‘colour’ इत्यादि Clause के Subject के Verb ‘to be’ से जुड़े रहते हैं, न कि Prepositions से । दूसरे शब्दों में ऐसे में Preposition का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।
जैसे –
- What colour are her eyes?
- He is just the right height to be a policeman.
- She is the same age as me.
- His head’s a funny shape.
- I am the same weight as I was twenty years ago.
- What shoe size are you?
- This way/ the same way/ another way इत्यादि जैसे expressions से पूर्व प्रयुक्त Preposition in’ को अक्सर drop कर दिया जाता है।
जैसे – They plant corn (in) the same way as their ancestors used to plant.
- गंतव्य स्थान के रूप में प्रयुक्त ‘home’ के पहले Preposition to’ का प्रयोग नहीं होता है।
जैसे – I am going home.
Note : यदि Home के पहले my, our, your, his, her, their etc. का प्रयोग हो तो my/ our/your/his/her/their के पहले ‘to’ का प्रयोग हो सकता है। जैसे – They are going to their home.
- Noun + Infinitive + Preposition + O.W. वाले वाक्यों में Preposition of drop किया जा सकता है।
जैसे –
- She has no money to buy food (with).
- We have an hour to do it (in).
- We need a place to live (in).
- She had no place to go (to).
Preposition के प्रयोग के सम्बंध ध्यान देने योग्य कछ महत्त्वपूर्ण बातें
- Preposition के पूर्व या बाद Personal Pronoun के प्रयुक्त होने की स्थिति हो, तो उसके Objective case form का ही प्रयोग होता है।
जैसे – He often writes about you and her.
Now there is no friendship between him and her.
- यदि ‘and’ / ‘or’ से जुड़े दो शब्दों में असमान Preposition का प्रयोग होना हो, तो दोनों ही Preposition को स्पष्ट कर देना चाहिए।
जैसे – Nobody is responsible for the loss of and damage to your articles.
She is always conscious of and engaged in her duties.
- Preposition के बाद आनेवाले Finite Verbs हमेशा Gerund form में ही होते हैं।
जैसे- They aim at solving these problems.
She is not very good at cooking.
